Breast Reduction
Regain Comfort and Harmony
What Is Breast Reduction ?
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of overly large breasts and improves their shape. Breast hypertrophy is characterized by an excessive volume of the breasts relative to the body morphology, often associated with breast ptosis. This operation also aims to relieve any neck, shoulder, or back pain and restore the balance of the silhouette, allowing patients to feel more comfortable and confident in their bodies.
Why considering Breast Reduction ?
Reduction of Breast Volume and Restoration of Positioning
Breast reduction allows for a decrease in breast size by removing excess breast tissue and improves the contour while elevating the breast gland and the nipple-areolar complex for a natural appearance.
Improved Physical Well-Being
Many women choose this surgery due to physical pain caused by overly large breasts, such as back, neck, or shoulder pain. Breast reduction offers a solution to lighten the weight of the breasts while achieving a more harmonious and elongated silhouette. This surgery can also correct potential posture issues, facilitate sports activities, and improve the patient’s quality of life.
Insurance Coverage (Mutuelle)
In Belgium, breast reduction may be partially covered by your health insurance (mutuelle) when the procedure is deemed medically necessary — for example, in cases of severe back or shoulder pain caused by breast hypertrophy. A detailed medical report and pre-operative documentation are typically required. Dr. Paun can guide you through the documentation process during your consultation.

Surgical Techniques for Breast Reduction: Tailored Solutions for Every Breast Type
Personalized Consultation
Before the procedure, a consultation with the surgeon is necessary to assess the needs and expectations of the patient. After an open and relaxed discussion about motivations, preferences, and concerns, the surgeon evaluates the breasts to establish an appropriate treatment plan. Additionally, information and explanations will be provided regarding the breast reduction process, pre- and post-operative instructions, as well as benefits and risks. Depending on the case, pre-operative tests may be prescribed. Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts between 3 to 4 hours, depending on the size of the breasts and the patient’s preferences.
Procedure Steps
There are two techniques for breast reduction: - Vertical Technique ("Lollipop"): Involves two scars: one around the areola and a second vertical scar extending from region below the areola to the infra-mammary fold. - Inverted T-Shaped Technique (Anchor Lift): Involves a circular component around the areola, a vertical scar that connects the area below the areola to the infra-mammary fold, and a horizontal scar placed in the infra-mammary fold. The choice of technique depends on the size and volume of the breasts. During Breast Reduction, the surgeon removes excess skin and breast tissue in order to achieve a breast size matching patient’s proportions and preferences. Also, by reshaping and elevating the remaining breast gland together with the nipple areolar complex, breasts will regain a natural appearance.

Post-Operative Care after Breast Reduction: Recovery and Care Guidelines
Immediate Recovery Phase
A compressive bra is generally prescribed for 6 to 8 weeks to support the breasts and promote healing. Discomfort similar to soreness may be experienced, and pain relief medications may be prescribed to enhance post-operative comfort. Mild swelling and bruising are common and should gradually subside, typically disappearing completely within 3 to 4 weeks.
Return to Daily Life
A social rest period of 10 to 14 days is recommended for proper recovery. It is advised to avoid intense physical training during 6 to 8 weeks following the operation, particularly lifting heavy objects and engaging in sports.
Follow-Up and Healing
Follow-up appointments with the surgeon are essential to monitor healing progress and ensure that recovery is proceeding correctly. Scars will fade over time and can be treated with specific creams to improve their appearance.
Final Result
The final results after Breast Reduction become visible after 6 months to 1 year, once tissues stabilize and scars fade. The breasts will then appear harmonious, natural, and proportionate to the silhouette.
Tips for Optimal Recovery
Avoid direct sun exposure on the scars to prevent pigmentation. Maintain a balanced diet and avoid smoking to promote optimal healing. Wear the supportive bra as recommended by the surgeon to ensure proper support during the recovery period. By following these guidelines and having realistic expectations, patients can achieve a significant improvement in their silhouette and self-confidence after breast reduction.
